Tips for Halloween Concerning Your Smile

Posted .

The Halloween season is almost here, which means the sights and smells of sugar-filled festivities are on the horizon. If you are not careful, you can end up with oral health ailments such as tooth decay, cavities, dental erosion, or even oral accidents such as chips and cracks in your teeth. As a general reminder, establish a checklist to help prevent damage from occurring to your smile.

If you wish to avoid sugary sweets this season, consider switching out unhealthy sweets for healthy treats. If you have children, after they enjoy their trick-or-treating activities, you can exchange their candy for toys, money, or other incentives.

If you wish to enjoy a few snacks this season, be sure to exercise caution. Stay away from too much sugar, and choose candy carefully. This includes avoiding sticky or chewy sweets that can stick to your mouth and be difficult to wash away. Furthermore, exercise caution with popcorn balls, candy apples, and other hard candies that can easily chip or crack your teeth when bitten into.

Practice effective oral health care cleanings including brushing your teeth with a toothbrush that has soft bristles. In addition, be sure to clean between teeth with interdental tools such as dental floss. Don’t forget to stimulate saliva flow through chewing sugarless gum or drinking plenty of water. Additional treatments include visiting your dentist through oral examinations and professional cleanings.
