What is a dental crown?
A crown is a dental restoration designed to restore the health, functionality, and structure of a tooth that has experienced significant damage or decay. The crown fits over the entire tooth, starting at the gum line, and returns the tooth to its original shape and size. Dental crowns can be made from a number of materials, including porcelain. Many of our patients prefer porcelain crowns because they can be matched to your natural tooth color to blend in with the rest of your smile. While your crown may eventually require repair or replacement, they are intended to last for many years and provide a lasting restoration. We exclusively use 100% ceramic materials for crowns and bridges (not metal, and not porcelain-fused-to-metal) – because they are very much stronger (the strongest dental materials ever), more durable, less-abrasive to opposing teeth, can be thinner (requiring removal of less tooth structure), allow finer and smoother margins (the edges against the tooth – which are much easier to keep clean and decay-free over the long term), and are by far the most esthetic and naturally tooth-like in appearance of any dental restorative materials available.
Do I need a crown?
Our dentist, Dr. Douglas Doran, will help you determine whether a dental crown in Marlborough, Connecticut, is the best available option for restoring your smile. We may recommend this restoration in order to:
- Repair a seriously decayed or otherwise damaged tooth
- Strengthen a tooth that is cracked or weakened
- Improve the function and appearance of a misshapen tooth
- Protect a tooth after root canal treatment
- Support a large filling if little natural tooth structure remains
- Cover a dental implant
